Saturday and Sunday

Samuel has been really sick again the last couple of days. The cultures came back positive for staph. The doctors have him on several different antibiotics. Yesterday we got to the hospital and he was on 58% oxygen and all of his other ventilator settings were up. He wasn't oxygenating well, his vitals were all over the place, and his kidneys had stopped working again. His x-rays showed that his lungs were very cloudy.
The doctor decided to try switching to a more conventional ventilator. The one Samuel had been on is a more gentle alternative but they thought that he might do better if they switched him. Samuel did not tolerate being switched and is back on the ventilator he had been on. However, when they tried to switch him, they found out that his ventilator tube was leaking air around the edges. They decided to replace the tube with a larger one. When they took out his old tube, Samuel coughed up a lot of white mucus. They are testing it for bacteria.
After having a day of not urinating, the doctors decided to put Samuel back on steroids to get his kidneys working again. Thankfully, that began to work this morning. He has made several wet diapers. He is also oxygenating better (not great) now that he has the larger tube. The antibiotics seem to be working as well.
We are at 35% oxygen and are down on one setting from yesterday and up on another. I'd like him to be off the steroids and antibiotics as soon as possible because of all of the side-effects. Despite all that has happened, I still want a healthy normal life for Samuel and we will continue to pray for that.
It was nice to hear this morning that the doctors feel that everything we have seen on the ultrasound of Samuel's brain is nothing to worry about - that he should not have any negative effects from it. Today was first time that we've heard that particular positive news.
Michael and his family were up this weekend. It's so great to have him with me - especially when things get so hard. His faith is unbelievable. How blessed I am to have such a great family. :)

  4. Your Dad preached on "No Words" this morning...you know, when you just don't have the words to say what you are wanting, needing and feeling? I don't have the words to tell you all that I am praying for Samuel and all of you, but God is hearing those prayers and understands without words. All I can say is that I AM praying and that I love you!!!!
